Hold on

Unearthly cry,
keening with intense grief
Inhumane rage, burning within.

Vicious darkness, infesting a grieving heart.
Voices whispering madly, sweetly,
terrible nothings inside.

Calling out to the dark orb
with cruel intent, so close.

Unimaginable power in his hand,
to end the world.

Darkness infinite,
all his to command.

It answers, smoothly, happily
complying with his wish.

So horrible easy to become
what he was not meant to be:

becoming Nightmare incarnate,
instead of blue skies and golden sunshine.

Dark clouds of thunder,
which bore not a single drop of rain,
nor was there any hint of lightning within.

It began and ended with a word.
Not a particularly strong or powerful word, but a word that changed everything. It wasn't too long or difficult to spell. It wasn't uncommon either. In fact, it was a perfectly ordinary word, but, I suppose, its commonplace origin is what made it so special.
I loved that word.
But the word doesn't mean much without the story along with it and I was always one for telling good stories.
